Way back in 725, a notable figure from the Yamato Kingdom, which we now know as Nara Prefecture, named Soga Ishikawa Maro, ventured into the Usa region of Oita Prefecture, then called Toyokuni. Here, he encountered a mystical golden-haired boy named Usa Hachiman. This divine child guided him to build a shrine dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war. Heeding this celestial advice, Ishikawa Maro established Usa Jingu and began worshiping the deity known as Empress Jingu, who was believed to embody Hachiman. This event marks the inception of Usa Jingu.

Initially, Usa Jingu was dedicated to Empress Jingu, revered as the protector of the imperial family. However, during the Heian period, her worship evolved as she came to be recognized as a god of war, blending with the Buddhist deity Bishamonten. This fusion resulted in a unique form of Hachiman worship. Over time, Hachiman became the patron of the samurai, earning widespread devotion.

Usa Jingu holds a significant place in Japan's historical tapestry. It's celebrated alongside the Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine in Kyoto and the Hakozaki Shrine in Fukuoka as one of Japan's "Three Great Hachiman Shrines," with Usa Jingu being the most prominent among them. During the Heian period, it was designated as an official kanpeitaisha, a government-supported shrine. Following the Meiji period's separation of Shinto and Buddhism, Usa Jingu emerged as a distinct Shinto shrine and now serves as the head shrine for over 40,000 Hachiman shrines across Japan.

Kick off your visit by purifying yourself at the temizuya (water basin) – a ritual that involves washing your hands and rinsing your mouth.
